Why silent killer? because it gives no prominent warning signs or symptoms. If untreated, it can lead to various health problems like heart disease, kidney disease, stroke etc. Therefore, it is recommended to regularly monitor the blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHAT IS HYPERTENSION<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypertension is high blood pressure. It is when the blood pressure is raised consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CATEGORISATION OF BLOOD PRESSURE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NORMAL = &lt; 120 \/ 80 mm Hg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ELEVATED = 120 &#8211; 129 \/ &lt; 80 mm Hg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HYPERTENSION STAGE 1 = 130 &#8211; 139 \/ 80 &#8211; 89 mm Hg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HYPERTENSION STAGE 2 = > 140 \/ > 90 mm Hg    (AHA. 2017)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is advised to get your  BP checked atleast twice on at least 2 different  occasions one after another before a diagnosis is reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHO IS AT THE RISK OF HYPERTENSION?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone is at risk of developing hypertension. But some people with the following conditions are more prone to develop it. These are Obesity or overweight, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, smoking, stress, sleep apnea and advancing stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HOW CAN ONE KNOW THAT ONE IS AT RISK OF HYPERTENSION<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is is advised to get yourself checked regularly if you have any of the above condition. Tests that can be done to assess risk for  hypertension are FBS, CBC, Electrocardiogram, Lipid profile, Thyroid hormone levels, Urinary albumin : creatinine ratio, Urinalysis, Uric acid level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAN BLOOD PRESSURE RISE DUE TO OTHER DISEASES?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes it can. A number of pre-existing condition can lead to Hypertension known as Secondary Hypertension. These pre-existing conditions are: Chronic Renal disease, Peripheral artery disease, Reno vascular disease, Primary aldosteronism, Obstructive sleep apnea, Alcohol induced Hypertension, Cushing&#8217;s syndrome, Drug induced hypertension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DIET FOR HYPERTENSION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Follow balanced diet with emphasis on whole grains, fruits and vegetables.<\/li><li>No nutrient should be eliminated, unless specifically suggested.<\/li><li>DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet is recommended.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DIETARY AND LIFESTYLE GUIDELINES FOR HYPERTENSION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension)  diet should be used to manage and treat hypertension. DASH diet mainly consists of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products, poultry, fish, nuts and seeds.<\/li><li>Intake of vegetables, fruits and whole grains should be increased.<\/li><li>Good quality fats and antioxidants should be included.<\/li><li>Low fat proteins should be included in the diet like curds, milk, eggs, low fat poultry etc.<\/li><li>Limit the use of oil to 3 tsp per day per person and oil should be high in MUFA and Omega 3.<\/li><li>Potassium and magnesium rich foods should be included like whole grains, green leafy veg, fruits, dals.<\/li><li>High saturated fats should be avoided such as butter, ghee, full fat dairy products, margarine,  bakery products etc.<\/li><li>Sodium intake should be reduced.
